Day 8

Vitamin Intake Reminder

For bariatric patients, taking your bariatric multivitamin, iron, and calcium every day isn’t just a suggestion—it’s essential to your health for life. After bariatric surgery, your body’s ability to absorb nutrients changes, and these supplements are critical to filling the nutritional gaps and keeping you strong, energized, and healthy.

Especially during the holiday season, when routines get disrupted and stress levels can rise, sticking to your vitamin routine is more important than ever. Regular intake of these supplements ensures that you’re getting the B12, calcium, vitamin D, and iron you need to prevent deficiencies and avoid issues like fatigue, bone weakness, or even hair loss.

If you’ve had the Switch or SADI procedure, it is even more imperative that you take your bariatric vitamin regimen every day so you can additionally absorb the fat-soluble ADEK vitamins.

When you take your vitamins daily, you’re supporting long-term health and setting yourself up to fully enjoy holiday activities without the worry of feeling rundown. Vitamins are so important, that we made an entire bariatric course around Vitamin & Mineral Deficiencies inside our membership support group Banana Bariatrics about them.

Here are some helpful reminders for taking your vitamins regularly:

  1. Set a Daily Alarm
Use your phone or a reminder app to set a specific time each day to take your vitamins. Choose a time that aligns with your daily routine, such as after breakfast or dinner.
  2. Incorporate Into an Existing Habit
Pair taking your vitamins with a habit you already do consistently, like brushing your teeth, drinking your morning coffee, or preparing your lunch.
  3. Keep Vitamins Visible
Place your vitamins in a spot you’re at multiple times per day, like the kitchen counter, bathroom sink, or on your desk. If they’re out of sight, they’re often out of mind.
  4. Use a Pill Organizer
A weekly pill organizer helps you pre-plan doses and makes it easy to see if you’ve missed a day.
  5. Set Calendar Reminders
Add vitamin reminders to your digital calendar or planner. Seeing it as part of your schedule helps reinforce the habit.
  6. Make It Convenient
Keep vitamins in a travel case for when you’re on the go. Having a stash in your bag or car ensures you never miss a dose when life gets busy.
  7. Track Your Progress
Use a habit-tracking app or a physical calendar to mark off each day you take your vitamins. The visual progress can motivate you to stay consistent.
  8. Pair with Water Intake
Link the habit to staying hydrated. Carry a water bottle and take vitamins at the same time.
  9. Stay Informed
Remind yourself why you’re taking your vitamins. Preventing vitamin deficiencies will spare you needing to take even more vitamins for repletion!
  10. Prep Ahead
If you’re meal prepping, include your vitamins in the same prep routine. Set them in containers next to your meal or snack for easy access.
  11. Ask for Accountability
Enlist a friend, family member, or support group to remind and motivate each other to take vitamins.
  12. Use Visual Cues
Add sticky notes in visible areas like the bathroom mirror or fridge with a friendly reminder to take your vitamins.
